Alaskan Cruise: Day 6
Happy 250th, America! Hope we make it to 251.
Today, we are back to Skagway. The little town that lives off the cruise ship visits. We were here back in 2919 so we had a good idea what to expect.
Instead of the White Pass train ride, this time we went on the Historical City, Gold Panning, and Salmon Bake. It was an enjoyable recreation of what life was like during the Yukon Gold Rush.
(Spoilers: It Sucked.)
The gold panning was fun and both Wendi and I got a few (microscopic) flakes. I was certainly more successful than my gold panning attempts as a teenager in desperate hopes of coming up with a Mother’s Day gift.
(Poverty: It just sucks.)
We ended our tour at an old timey cemetery chock-full of folks who died over a century ago and usually very young.
A few minutes hike from there was a picturesque falls where we took pictures.
(Grey, black, army green. You’re not even trying at this point, are you?)
Even more impressive than the falls was the sand along the banks. We both immediately saw gold flecks. Lots of gold flecks.
In the 5 or 6 minutes before we had to run back to the tour bus, we each picked out a couple of good sizes (.0002 gram) flakes just with our hands. Why did we waste all that time learning history, looking at decrepit grave markers, and eating salmon?? (Sigh) C’est la Vie.
Or as the French say, C’est La Vie.
In town, we (mostly Wendi) did some shopping and picked up some nice jewelry. She also pick up some other local treasures.
Fish gotta swim, a rock hound’s gotta..uh.. hound rocks.
This being Skagway, we were both on the lookout for any pregnant-looking ladies. Fortunately, we didn’t see any.

The rest of tonight could be busy going to shows. Or chilling in the cabin. The next two days will be at sea so we have plenty of time to see the 8-10 items on our to do list.
